Walking stick - Horn, Wood - Hand-carved buffalo horn

Unique Antique Indonesian Walking Cane with Handcarved Buffalo Horn Naga (Dragon) and Intricate Steel – circa 1900/1920 Description: For auction: An exceptionally characteristic and authentic antique walking cane from the former Dutch East Indies (Indonesia), dating from the early 20th century (circa 1900-1920). This is a beautiful piece of colonial repatriation art/folk art with a very high level of craftsmanship and a unique appearance. Handle (Naga/Dragon): The handle is masterfully and finely hand-carved from dark buffalo horn, evident in the beautiful, subtle layered structure of the material. The grip depicts a mythical Naga (protector dragon/serpent). Very special about this specimen is that the teeth in the open mouth are individually inlaid and made from real animal material (bone/ivory). In the eye sockets there originally sat precious red coral eyes; these have sadly been lost over the decades, but the authentic mounting holes are still clearly visible. Shaft & Condition: What makes this walking cane particularly striking is the beautifully formed, organically meandering shaft. The maker preserved the natural, winding course of the wood, which perfectly suits the symbolism of the moving dragon or serpent. The shaft is made of a sturdy hardwood with a warm, reddish-brown glow. The grip and shaft are tightly connected. The cane is in a beautiful, authentic antique condition with a well-worn patina and light signs of age and use inherent to the object's age. A stunning and honest collectible for enthusiasts of antique walking canes and Southeast Asian art! Specifications: • Origin: Indonesia (Dutch East Indies) • Period: Circa 1900 - 1920 • Grip material: Hand-carved buffalo horn with inlaid teeth • Shaft material: Naturally formed hardwood (curved/undulating) • Total length: 93 cm • Grip length (head): 13 cm • Condition: Good antique condition (see photos for an accurate impression, coral eyes are missing)
