Rare antique walking cane made from presumed shark vertebrae – maritime curiosity – ca. 1880–1920 (pre-1947). A special antique walking cane, crafted from real shark vertebrae that have been carefully strung on a flexible metal core. The cane features an ebonized wooden grip with a end cap. The shaft consists of numerous natural vertebrae with a beautiful ivory- to honey-colored patina. The light flexibility of the shaft is characteristic of this type of construction. Such canes were produced at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century as maritime curiosities and collectibles. Today they are cherished by collectors of natural history objects, maritime antiques, rarities, canes, and Wunderkammer items (cabinet of curiosities). Condition The walking stick is in good antique condition. Complete specimen. No visible missing vertebrae. Nice natural patina. Light signs of use appropriate to age. The shaft still possesses the characteristic light flexibility. No visible repairs. Vertebrae are mounted on a flexible iron rod.
