Wall plate (2) - A Magnificently Chased Pair of Louis...

A pair of highly important and decorative circular wall plaques, finely executed in the Rococo style. Each charger is framed with a wide, monumental border of openwork gilt-bronze (ormolu), most exquisitely cast and chased en relief with playful putti amidst trailing grapevines, fruiting clusters, acanthus leafage, and scrolling foliate designs. The openwork borders enclose a central porcelain medallion delicately hand-painted with romantic fêtes galantes in the pastoral manner of M. Fragonard, depicting courtly figures in 18th-century attire within sylvan garden settings. Each central reserve is further encompassed by six radiating oval porcelain inserts: three finely rendered with miniature courtly portraits of noble dames in historical costume, alternating with three inserts bearing vibrant sprays of summer blossoms.
