Washington, District of Columbia. Arlington Bank. 1854 $5. PMG Very Fine 25.

District of Columbia Washington, District of Columbia. Arlington Bank. 1854 $5. PMG Very Fine 25. No. 156. Plate C. Offered here is an evenly circulated "obligation" of a fraudulent bank that first emerged during the mid-1850s. Described by the Evening Star as a "bogus concern from first to last," offices were advertised briefly with endorsements made by "two papers of significance" per the Whitman Encyclopedia of Obsolete Paper Money Vol. 8. The bank later failed by 1856 and issued notes are extremely rare as alluded to by the description which accompanied this piece when it sold as part of the Capital City Sale in 2007 where it was quoted as a "discovery note" in the words of Tom Denly of Massachusetts. Estimate: $1,000 - $1,500. Provenance: From the Caine Collection. Earlier ex. Stack's Capital City Sale of October 2007, Lot 1198. Whitman Plate Note. Click here for certification details from PMG.
