Wè/Guéré sculptural mask – mask with an arachnid...

Spectacular sculptural mask attributed to the Wè / Guéré of western Ivory Coast, presented on its elegant black metal pedestal. This work immediately stands out for its construction with remarkable plastic power. The face is organized around a prominent bulging frontal volume, dominating an open and deeply architectural composition. Vigorous curved elements converge toward the center of the face while a long vertically projected appendage strongly enhances depth and gives the whole a nearly animal presence. This multi-plane design is particularly striking when viewing the mask from three-quarters and profile: the sculpted elements literally leave the plane of the face and occupy space, producing powerful plays of shadow and light. The gaze is materialized by small annular volumes deeply hollowed. The arched structures surrounding the central part can evoke, by their arrangement, legs or stylized mandibles. This complex physiognomy stylistically brings the piece closer to certain Wè / Guéré masks described on the market and in commercial literature as “spider masks,” whose construction accumulates reliefs, openings, and projected elements. Exemplars attributed to the Wè of the Duékoué region also appear under this name on Catawiki. The wood displays a very deep patina ranging from dark brown to black brown, punctuated by warmer zones, reddish-brown and ochre, particularly visible on the reliefs. The numerous surface variations, abrasions, traces of handling, small losses, and irregularities strongly contribute to the work’s character. The interior is particularly interesting for the collector. It preserves the traces of carving and hollows in the wood, with several ancient perforations visible. The edges also show various openings likely involved in fixing elements now absent or in the attachment system. These technical details provide an excellent reading of the piece’s construction. The upper part retains a suspension or attachment element, while the circumference and protruding volumes show signs of use and wear consistent with considerable age. I would, however, deliberately remain prudent: these visual clues alone are not sufficient to establish an ancient ritual use or an exact dating. Wè / Guéré art is particularly known for its expressive compositions where the human face can be profoundly transformed by the addition of volumes, projections, and anthropomorphic or zoomorphic elements. Sotheby’s aptly describes Guéré-Wobé masks as characterized by great freedom of invention and by volumes projected into space. Very beautiful decorative and sculptural presence. The piece works well both as an ethnographic object and as abstract sculpture: viewed face-on, it possesses an extremely strong expression, while the profiles reveal a three-dimensional architecture that is particularly spectacular.
