Wedgwood Black Basalt Chess Piece, King

This Wedgwood black basalt jasperware chess piece depicts a King and was designed by Arnold Machin. The figurine is modeled in a seated pose against a tall throne back. The queen is depicted wearing a crown and medieval attire, holding a globus cruciger in her right hand and a scepter in her left. The reverse of the throne features Gothic architectural motifs including pointed arches and a central heraldic lion rampant. The piece is made of unglazed black basalt stoneware with a characteristic matte finish. The name WEDGWOOD is impressed on the side of the base. The underside of the base features several impressed marks including MADE IN ENGLAND, the number 75, the letter M, and the three-letter code AWY.
