This Wedgwood black basalt jasperware chess piece is modeled as a queen, a design attributed to Arnold Machin. The figurine is crafted from matte-finish, unglazed black stoneware. The queen is depicted in a seated position wearing medieval robes and a crown, holding a fleur-de-lis scepter in her right hand. The reverse side features an embossed relief of a crowned figure within a gothic pointed-arch niche. The piece is marked WEDGWOOD on the lower side of the base.
