This transfer-printed earthenware jug is manufactured by Wedgwood and features decorative vignettes and text inspired by the poetry of Geoffrey Chaucer. The globular body is decorated with blue transfer prints including a cluster of mushrooms positioned before a rising sun with radiating rays and surrounded by bees. The opposite side depicts a weathervane in the form of a rooster accompanied by swallows in flight. The tapering neck features a pair of birds perched on a branch and a molded bearded mask at the base of the spout. The jug is inscribed with Middle English phrases from Chaucer's works including UPON THE SMALE, SOFTE, SWOTE GRAS and FOR I CAME UP Y NYSTE HOW. The underside features a printed blue mark consisting of a portrait bust of Geoffrey Chaucer within a circular border reading MOTTOES FROM CHAUCER and FIRST OF ENGLISH POETS. An impressed WEDGWOOD factory mark on the base. The base also retains a Rubin Collection label, a Skinner auction label for lot 2357.
