West-Mexico / Maya-cultuur - Pipe - Ceramic

A highly decorative and characteristic Mesoamerican 'effigy' (figurative) tobacco pipe, handcrafted from hand-formed terracotta. This object is beautifully shaped in the recognizable pre-Columbian tradition of West Mexico and the Maya cultural area. The object shows a fascinating merging of two sacred pre-Columbian symbols: The Pipe Head: Shaped like the head of a mammal (inspired by the sacred dog/coyote or coati). In mythology, these animals symbolized spiritual guides (Way of Nahual) who protected the soul. The tobacco chamber is located directly behind the head. The Shaft: On the back and the long, streamlined shaft is a relief-carved wavy snake. The snake (such as Kukulkan or Quetzalcoatl) represented the cosmos, transformation, and the ascending ritual smoke that binds the earth to the afterlife. The object features a beautiful, hand-polished engobe slip that gives the red and brown details a subtle luster. In the deeper areas an artificial lime deposition has been applied to give the pipe an archaeological appearance (patina). Product: Figurative tobacco pipe / Effigy pipe. Material: Hand-formed terracotta (clay), unglazed and polished with engobe. Origin / Style: Mesoamerica (stylistic features of West Mexico / Maya culture). Dating: 2nd half of the 20th century (high-quality style object / studio replica). Condition: In good, decorative condition. The snout of the animal figure shows an old break/damage (see detail photos), which contributes to the rustic and authentic character of the piece. The smoking canal is fully open and continuous to the mouthpiece.
