WESTON (Edward). Nudes. His Photographs Accompanied by Excerpts from the Daybooks & Letters. Millerton, New York, Aperture, 1977. Large in-4 format, approximately 30 cm, 116 pp., numerous black-and-white photographic reproductions, paperback with illustrated photographic cover. Remembrance by Charis Wilson. First edition of this important monograph devoted to the nudes of Edward Weston, one of the most famous series in the American photographer’s oeuvre. The book brings together some fifty photographic plates, accompanied by excerpts from Weston’s Daybooks and correspondence. It is introduced by a text by Charis Wilson, his partner, collaborator, and one of his favorite models, who offers a personal account of the creation of several of these photographs. The bibliography confirms the 1977 Aperture edition, 116 pages, available in both paperback and hardcover. Taken primarily between the 1920s and 1940s, Weston’s nudes are among the most characteristic expressions of his aesthetic: the human body is treated as a sculptural form through framing, lighting, and the abstraction of volumes. The book thus combines the images with the photographer’s own writings and the recollections of Charis Wilson, lending the collection a dimension that is both documentary and intimate. Original paperback edition from 1977, not to be confused with the deluxe edition published the same year in a limited run of 350 copies signed by Charis Wilson and accompanied by an original platinum print, nor with later reprints. A fair copy. The cover is intact but shows significant signs of wear: scuffing and soiling, creases, and small marks on the corners and edges; the lamination is worn in places; the interior appears clean and well-preserved.
