What are Boundaries by Amy Bernays Painting 16.0 x 12.0 :: What are boundaries? Where should they be for me? How do you use them? How do I make them real to others? I had no idea. I knew that I needed better ones but where do I put them? Are they the fences that you erect around the hill you will die on? I started to think about them from inside me. I only know them from others from the outside. The mom with perfect nails and ample respect has boundaries in droves. She is a master builder of boundaries. Are boundaries always no’s? Our boundary knows. Are boundaries no’s? How can I describe boundaries outside of language? I wonder how to know where to put them or where to find them? Do I feel the counters of my life? Do I go inside the warm and squishy of myself and feel the way? Like a blind raccoon feeling in the kelp for mollusks under the sea. I need to dig with my face to sniff out the emotional changes that make the landscapes of my mind. I made this painting. And then like so many they lurk around my studio. I wasn’t finished yet. Eventually I brought it into the house and asked my son to add to it however he felt so inclined. I love that he drew a perfect playful take on my boundary walls. He know immediately that they needed to be breached and tested for structural integrity. With humor and honesty he totally answered the questions that I had about boundaries. This is the perfect non verbal conversation within a mother/son relationship in mid childhood. I am starting to see. I am a cartographer. Investigating the visual landscape of my psych. Feeling my way through the emotions noting down what feels and when.
