Where shadows turn blue by Gary Westall Painting 23.6 x 11.8 :: A photograph by Dave Webb (Exmoor Coast The Valley of Rocks) inspired me to paint this picture as the interplay of light shadow and the powerful forms of the rocks fascinated and inspired me. The pale chalk cliffs meet the deep blue of the sea whilst sunlight and shadow lend the landscape an almost abstract quality. I found it particularly fascinating how the light sculpts the stone forms and how even the shadows take on shades of blue violet and turquoise. The vastness of the horizon and the tranquillity of the coast create a quiet moment between power and lightness.
