"Wild Woman" Totem Pole

A large standing totem pole in cedar known as a Welcome Pole depicts Tsonoqua- Wild Woman of the Woods. Attributed to master carver John Livingston (1951-2019), the Welcome Pole greets visitors with its outstretched arms as well as standing guard over the tribe and their possessions. Offending visitors would be rebuked by strong winds from Tsonoqua's lips. John Livingston was an accomplished West Coast artist who studied sculpture at the Royal British Columbia Museum in the traditional Kwagiulth style under the tutelage of the late native carver Henry Hunt and his son Tony Hunt. British Columbia. Late 20th century. Unmarked.
