Biography: Willem Hendrik Eickelberg, as a painter, never became widely known. He was born in 1845 in Amsterdam and received his training there at the Royal Academy. Afterwards he painted landscapes, city and seascapes in a budding impressionist style. His winter landscapes are sometimes still strongly romantically idealized, but he also painted city and coast views with ships that give a somewhat more contemporary image of his time. Until 1878 the painter lived and worked in Amsterdam. Afterwards he settled, after some wandering, in Blaricum (1904) and then in Hilversum. Museums: including the Nederlands Historisch Scheepvaartmuseum in Amsterdam and the Rijksmuseum Kröller-Möller in Otterlo own works by his hand. This painting is, according to art experts, datable to ca. 1880 to 1890, ,, Yet these works by him are rarely offered at auctions but now at CATAWIKI."
