William Henry Cotton (American, 1880-1958), Sketches for "The New Yorker" Magazine Comprising: a sketch for the September 18, 1948 cover, depicting two gentlemen seated in an interior, with a large view to the outside, including a banner partially reading "Democrat Club"; a sketch depicting a busy office with gentlemen on the phone and a poster in the background, partially reading, "John Mor.../ Senator"; and a small sketch of a figure in red carrying a large sack over their shoulder with looming shadow behind. All pastel on illustration board. Dimensions: 15 in. x 10 in. each William Henry Cotton was born in Newport, Rhode Island, and studied art in Boston and Paris before becoming a successful portrait artist. He was a founder of the National Association of Portrait Painters and exhibited a various national institutions. He began working as a caricaturist at Vanity Fair in 1931, and The New Yorker the following year, where his work appeared on 55 covers between 1932 and 1951. Condition All unframed and with heavy foxing. The pastel in good, stable condition.
