The mining fields of Australia are famous for the most beautiful opals in the world. But did you know that jewellery with Australian precious opals has not been around that long? The first European to discover opals in Australia was the German geologist Johannes Menge. He found opals north of Adelaide in 1841 - but little attention was paid to these finds because they were not precious jewellery-quality opals. There is no written record of the first discovery of precious opals until 1872, when commercial mining began in Queensland in the 1890s. Finally, in 1905 further opal fields were discovered in Lightning Ridge, in 1915 in Coober Pedy and in 1930 in Andamooka. Large solid opals, like all large and untreated coloured stones, are a "must have" as far as jewels are concerned, because they are exceedingly rare! Not only their beauty inspires, but also their stable value convinces. The opal in the center of the present pendant is such a gemstone: the opal in an oval cabochon cut shows a wonderful play of colours. In fact, depending on the incidence of light, all the colours of the rainbow can be seen: The stone has very many beautiful shades of green and turquoise, but also yellow, red, orange and even violet nuances can be seen. A framing of fine brilliant cut diamonds in bright white colour surrounds the gold-set opal. The diamonds enhance the glow of the opal's colours while exuding lightness and an elegant splendor. A total of twenty diamonds with a total weight of 1.83 carats bathe the piece of jewellery in a sparkling glow, thus elevating it to a desirable jewel. With a gold Venetian chain, the gemstone ensemble can be worn immediately around the neck. An independent certificate confirms the quality of the materials used.
