Ryōkan, the wandering sage of Japan Sitting in seiza, a manuscript open in his hands, Ryōkan seems suspendedOutside of time. His gaze is not turned toward the reader but toward an inner world where poetry, meditation, and compassion meet. The emaciated face, slightly parted lips, and the infinite gentleness of the expression rarefully convey the humanity of one whom the Japanese still today regard as the very embodiment of spiritual simplicity. Born in 1758 in Echigo Province, Ryōkan Taigu (良寛大愚) gave up worldly ambitions early to follow the Zen path. After years of study and monastic practice, he chose a hermit’s existence in a modest hut called Gogo-an, living in voluntary simplicity, writing poems, practicing calligraphy, and sharing his daily life with the villagers and children who surrounded him. His refusal of wealth or fame made him a figure deeply beloved by the Japanese people. His poetic and calligraphic work today holds a major place in Japanese culture. His writings celebrate the simplest things: a wildflower, the passage of the seasons, children’s laughter, or the silence of the mountains. This unostentatious spirituality explains why Ryōkan remains, nearly two centuries after his death, one of Japan’s most popular personalities. This sculpture is the work of Arimura Tatsuo (有村辰夫), a Japanese sculptor renowned for his representations of historical and spiritual figures. Several Japanese references present him as a disciple of the master Hirakushi Denchū (平櫛田中, 1872-1979), one of the major figures of modern Japanese sculpture. This lineage appears particularly convincing in the psychological quality of the portrait, the anatomical mastery of the hands, and the extraordinary presence of the face. Made in carved and polychromed wood, the work favors inner expression over any decorative effect. The delicate nuances of the skin tones, the subtle modeling of the wrinkles, the meditative gaze, and the refined treatment of the clothes all testify to a remarkable technical mastery. The open book he holds reproduces a cursive script inspired by Ryōkan’s manuscripts, recalling his renown as a poet and calligrapher. Under the base the sculpture bears the inscription: 良寛 Ryōkan 辰夫作之 Made by Tatsuo It is accompanied by its original tomobako, signed: 有村辰夫作 Work by Arimura Tatsuo with the artist’s personal seal. More than a simple portrait, this work is a tribute to one of Japan’s greatest sages. It brings together Ryōkan’s spiritual depth and the craftsmanship of a sculptor from the great tradition of modern Japanese sculpture.
