Wooden mask - Lega - DR Congo (No reserve price)

Lega wooden mask from the DRC This wooden mask is associated with the Lega, a people living mainly in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, notably in the Kivu region. Lega art is particularly linked to the initiatory practices of the Bwami society, within which masks and other carved objects play a symbolic and educational role. Lega works are often distinguished by stylized forms, deliberately simplified proportions, and strong expressiveness. Carved in wood, this mask bears witness to the craftsmanship of Lega artisans and to the importance given to shapes and symbols in their artistic tradition. Its formal simplicity and expressive character make it a particularly interesting piece for an African art collection. This contemporary work continues the Lega aesthetic and highlights the cultural and artistic richness of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
