Workshop of GIOVANNI MARTINELLI (Montevarchi, 1600 - Florence, 1659)

Descriptio Oil on canvas. Measurements: With Frame 25 x 115 cm without Frame 110 x 100 cm.. An important religious composition from the Florentine Baroque school, linked to the artistic circle of Giovanni Martinelli, an Italian painter renowned for the elegance of his figures, the delicacy of their expressions, and the use of Caravaggesque lighting softened by a refined chromatic treatment. The work depicts the Holy Family in an intimate and devotional scene, with the Christ Child at the center of the composition, seated between the Virgin Mary and Saint Joseph. The Child, dressed in a vibrant red tunic and a blue-green mantle, gazes towards the viewer while raising one hand in blessing and holding the other clasped with his mother’s. To his right, the Virgin is depicted as a young woman with delicate features and a serene expression, her head slightly inclined towards her son and one hand resting on her chest, a gesture that accentuates the affectionate and spiritual nature of the scene. On the left, Saint Joseph emerges from the shadows as an elderly, bearded figure, whose presence lends balance and depth to the composition. The work is notable for its striking chiaroscuro, which concentrates the light on the faces, hands, and garments, leaving the background almost entirely in darkness. The contrast between the luminous reds, bluish greens, and warm flesh tones reveals a chromatic sensibility akin to Florentine painting of the mid-17th century. The softness of the modeling, the idealization of the female faces, and the naturalness of the gestures allow for stylistic comparisons with the work of Giovanni Martinelli and other representatives of the Tuscan Baroque, such as Francesco Furini (1603-1646) and Cesare Dandini (1596-1657), particularly due to the delicate treatment of the figures, the compositional elegance, and the atmosphere of spiritual contemplation. The work combines the influence of Caravaggesque naturalism with a more classicist and sentimental interpretation of religious painting, characteristic of certain Florentine artistic circles of the 17th century. Its format and dimensions suggest it was intended for a private devotional space of some importance or for a religious setting. The attribution to the workshop of Giovanni Martinelli is based on its stylistic characteristics and should be verified through direct examination of the work.
