Xavier de Gaulle

Xavier de Gaulle

Autograph letter signed by Xavier de Gaulle, older brother of General Charles de Gaulle and French Consul General in Geneva. The letter is dated February 9, 1951. Written in black ink on a double sheet of parchment paper with the printed header “Consulat Général de France à Genève.” A passage of the text is underlined by the author. In this letter, Xavier de Gaulle reflects on remarks he made about a personality who had rendered services to the French colony. He discusses the organization of the defense of the French in Geneva against discriminatory measures, on a local and administrative level, and does not exclude political intervention. " this 9 February 1951 My dear friend, I thank you for your letter of the 7th which shows me that in the light of the clarifications I gave you on the telephone you have understood my thought well. As I immediately sensed and told you the next day, the terms I used could take on a meaning I was far from intending to give them and would distress someone whom I hold in the highest esteem and sympathy, and who moreover has rendered all kinds of services to our compatriots. As you wrote, this is above all on the federal level that the person I spoke of could be useful to the Colony, all the more since it is from there that directives concerning discriminatory measures originate. However, it is not excluded that here too, once all our possibilities for an amicable settlement, official or not, have been exhausted, a political intervention may prove more effective: things are such that we fear we may be forced, one day or another, to use this means. But, above all, we must organize our own defense locally and administratively, and it is here that the numerous results you have obtained and your experience, not to mention your great dedication to our cause, will make your collaboration with my services and with me more necessary than ever. I will be happy to have a meeting with you on this subject within the coming week. You may also be assured, and I personally insist on it, that I will make at the next sitting of the Chamber the necessary clarification. Please accept, my dear friend, the expression of my best and very faithful sentiments." - Dimensions: 14.9 x 21.1 cm - Condition: Good overall condition, creases inherent to shipment.
