She was a precursor of the pop art, minimalism and feminist art movements and influenced her contemporaries, Andy Warhol and Claes Oldenburg.[2] Although she was forgotten after leaving the New York art scene in the early 1970s, she was recognized during her lifetime as one of Japan's most important artists and was an important voice of the avant-garde.
