Dutch oak bedstead step with horse and bird motif – Anno 1627 Description: Rare and characterful Dutch folk-art piece from the 19th century (dated 1627). This oak bedstead-step used to be climbed into a raised bedstead. That this ordinary and heavily used utilitarian object has withstood the test of time and still exists after four centuries makes this a particularly collectible piece. Symbolism & Rich Woodcarving: The piece stands out for its distinctive, open-work woodcarving through which you can look beautifully, creating a lovely interplay of light and shadow: Front (Horse motif): Two powerful, facing, rearing horses around a central life tree. In 19th-century folk art, horses symbolized strength, nobility, and prosperity on the farm. Above the horses are two carved cartouches with the inscriptions ANNO and 1627. Sides (Bird & Foliage): The sides are richly decorated with gracefully cut scroll motifs in which refined birds are integrated among the branches. Construction & History: The little chest is handcrafted with classical mortise-and-tenon joints, which are clearly visible on the sides. As is typical with furniture nearly 200 years old, over the centuries some parts have likely been renewed or reinforced to keep the piece functional. The oak wood has a beautiful, warm patina with authentic wear on the edges and characteristic shrinkage cracks. Versatile & Decoratively Suitable in a Modern Interior: Thanks to the compact dimensions and the open structure, this historical object can be stylishly placed in numerous ways: Pedestal / Platform: A atmospheric raise for a special antique sculpture, bronze, or artwork. TV or Audio Stand: Ideal for giving a television screen, soundbar, or audio setup an authentic accent. Plant Bench: A unique place for plants in the living room or outdoors on a covered balcony in good weather. Wall / Hall Furniture: Because of its small size and light weight, it is also beautiful mounted as a unique wall cabinet or hall furniture for keys and accessories.
