Two hand-carved Shona stone busts - Green Serpentine - Zimbabwe - 2nd half of the 20th century Object description: Beautiful, handmade set of two African busts (village elders—grandfather and grandmother), crafted by a Shona artist from Zimbabwe. The sculptures are expertly hand-carved from solid green serpentine stone (serpentine). A hallmark of these contemporary Shona works is the stunning play of textures: the faces and necks are fully smooth-ground and polished to a high gloss, allowing the deep green tones and natural veining in the stone to come beautifully to the fore. This forms a strong contrast with the rough, chiseled texture of the hair and beards. The sculptures are in excellent, undamaged condition and form a harmonious duo. Details & Specifications: • Art movement: Shona art (Contemporary African art) • Origin: Zimbabwe • Material: Green serpentine stone (Serpentine) • Period: approx. 1980s to present • Condition: Excellent condition, without chips or cracks (see photos) • Total weight: 2500 g (2.5 kg) • Large bust: 1800 g | Height: approx. 15 cm • Small bust: 700 g | Height: approx. 13 cm
