Throughout the history of Western art, the nude human form has been a tradition in sculpture, painting and other media. The tradition is thought to have been popularised by the Ancient Greeks, although examples of nudity in art exist before this period and in other cultures. In the 4th century BC, the Classical Greek sculptor, Praxiteles, produced the first monumental sculpture of a female nude with his Aphrodite of Knidos. Alongside many other influences from the Classical world, the Renaissance period saw a revival for nudity in art. One of the most celebrated nude sculptures is the statue of David by Michelangelo, which today stands in the Galleria dell'Accademia in Florence. In the 1480s, Sandro Botticelli created the renowned Birth of Venus, featuring the nude figure of the goddess. Nudity continued to be the subject of art throughout the years up until today, with modern media such as photography and film also adopting the tradition.
