Agnes Martin called herself an abstract expressionist and was part of the intellectual avant garde of New York before she moved away from the city in 1967. Her paintings are usually composed by grids, lines and fields of dull colours. Martin is usually referred to as minimalist due to her harmonically composed paintings and use of soft colours. Her paintings have a meditative quality said to have come from her interest in Eastern philosophy.
