Christian Marclay is a Swiss and American artist whose work tangents both art and music. Marclay explores the relationship between sound, noise, photography and video. Marclay studied at Ecole Supérieure d'Art Visuel in Geneva, Massachusetts College of Art and Design in Boston and later at Cooper Union in New York. As a student at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design Marclay developed his interest in performance art and punk rock. His interest in music inspired him to explore the relationship between visual images and sound art. Marclay is referred as the first non-rap DJ who made use of the turntable as art, since he uses it as an instrument to pull sounds apart, instead of putting them together. Marclay has exhibited in spaces such as the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, the Venice Biennale, the Centre Pompidou in Paris and the Museum of Modern Art in San Francisco.
