Ferdinand Fagerlind was a Swedish artist and portrait painter who was also a military officer. Fagerlind studied at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm for two years before he was commissioned as an officer. After only four years as an officer he decided to return to art. Fagerlind subsequently moved to Germany to study and settled in Düsseldorf for most of his life. He painted everyday images of fishermen and sailors in detailed and carefully composed images and was recognized abroad earlier than in Sweden.
