Karel Appel (1921-2006) The Netherlands

Karel Appel was born in 1921 in the Netherlands and is known as a sculptor, visual artist and ceramic artist. Appel studied at the National Academy of Fine Arts in Amsterdam. His work bears influences from Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso.
 Karel Appel was a founder of the COBRA artist’s group, whose goal was “to liberate art from the norms and art movements of Western culture”. His work is colorful, expressionist, and often representational of different figures, creating sculpture from various materials in an assemblage technique. Appel received the Guggenheim International Award in 1960.
