Marie-Louise Ekman was born in Stockholm on November 5, 1944. She is an artist, filmmaker and Managing Director of the Royal Dramatic Theatre. Ekman was a professor of painting at the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm from 1984 to 1991, and rector between 1999 and 2000. Since 2009, she has been the Managing Director of the Royal Dramatic Theatre in Stockholm.
Ekman studied at the Pernby School of Painting and Beckmans College of Design. Since her debut at Galleri Karlsson in 1967, Ekman has been a prominent figure in Sweden’s cultural world. She is a diverse artist who has tried most techniques, media and genres. In addition to painting, film and television, she has worked with sculpture, children’s books, posters and scenography. Ekman’s work often depicts human relationships, both tragic and absurd, as well as identity, dreams, everyday life and pop culture.
