Vera Nilsson was a Swedish visual artist born in Småland. Nilsson studied at the University College of Arts, Crafts & Design, which was called Tekniska Skolan at that time, under Carl Wilhelmsson at Valand in Gothenburg and at the Académie de la Palette in Paris. Nilsson’s art is characterized by a heavy and robust technique. Frequent motifs included landscapes and children’s portraits, where her daughter Catharina was one of her favorite subjects. Nilsson received many public commissions, including the Central Station in Stockholm. She was one of the driving forces to decorate local public transportation and worked hard to gain approval to fill the subways with art.
