Waino Aaltonen studied painting in Turku from 1910 to 1914 and had his breakthrough in 1915, though it was in sculpture. Aaltonen's early sculptures trended toward the classic style, but later came to be known for its post-Cubist features.
Aaltonen's art is heavily influenced by nationalism, heroism and idealization. He showed great respect for the materials he used, and his art is reminiscent of Egypt. Aaltonen came to have great influence on the younger generation of artists, and his works can be studied at the Waino Aaltonen Museum of Art in Turku.
