Descriptio White, veined, and black marble. Dimensions: 39 × 27 × 12.5 cm (with base). A Roman-inspired sculptural bust depicting the Emperor Caracalla, with a draped cloak and his head turned to the right. The work combines marbles of different tones to highlight the portrait and the folds of the garment, in a virtuoso display of polychromy in stone. The physiognomic treatment conveys energy and determination, in keeping with the aesthetics of Roman imperial portraiture. Created in the 19th century, it exemplifies the Neoclassical taste for archaeological recreation and the study of ancient models.
