Certificate is made out to and signed by John Jacob Astor IV. John Jacob Astor IV (1864 to 1912) was a prominent American businessman, real estate developer, inventor, and member of the influential Astor family fortune. He expanded the family’s New York real estate holdings, invested in hotels and utilities, and held several patents, including work related to mechanical and electrical devices. Astor is also remembered as one of the most notable victims of the RMS Titanic, where he perished during the ship’s sinking in April 1912, a fact that firmly situates him among the most recognizable figures of America’s Gilded Age elite.
