"Naiade". A Lalique semi-opalescent glass car mascot, c1930, designed 1920, No 832, Marchilac catalogue No 399, 13cm h, engraved Lalique Provenance: Herbert Frood (1864-1931) thence by descent to the present vendor The businessman and industrialist Herbert Frood, being keenly interested in motor cars developed the first reliable method of effective braking. Living in the Peak District he was aware of the inadequacies of shoe brakes and primitive brake linings. He invented woven cotton and resin brake pads later using phenol resin. The company he founded, Ferodo Ltd - a household name - was floated on the London Stock Exchange in 1920. A passionate car enthusiast, his stable of marques included a Rolls Royce. Although there is no evidence of the present mascot having adorned any of his vehicles, it was undoubtedly his, and Frood is just the sort of customer that Lalique aimed to serve.
