Two letters from Jamaica to Mrs Dickson, 1815 and 1816. Packet Post. 1: Entire letter from Jamaica to Mrs Dickson; two entries written on the same sheet, the first dated 21st April 1815, the second 25th May 1815, care of Messrs Joseph Timperon Dobinson and co. Merchants, London. Postmarked stamped 25th May 1815. And B 10 JY 10 1815, From Jos. Green. Charged at 2/2. Embossed G stamp. ‘Triplicate, original p packet Grace, duplicate per Stm S Magnificent.’ Includes discussion alluding to Napoleon’s one hundred days; “The events on the continent were most unexpected, however since he was determined to make another trial. I am glad he did it so early, that is, previous to the Allied Sovereigns returning to their respective homes and discharging their Armies – If they only draw together, are prompt and decisive in their measures, I think, they might soon settle him and I hope and trust forever.” And rum sent per ‘Earl St. Vincent’ and ‘Camilby’, sugar. 2: Entire letter from Jamaica to Mrs Dickson from Jos. Green, packet post; two entries dated 12th April 1816, and 10 May 1816, care of Messrs Joseph Timperon Dobinson and co. Merchants, London. Postmarked D8 17th Jul 1816. Embossed G stamp. Includes accounts of sugar “80 to 90 Hhds”, and reference to Barbados slave revolt and the efforts of William Wilberforce. “We have just been informed of an insurrection among the slaves at Barbados occasioned by their conception that the Registry Bill brought into Parliament was intended to free them. Wilberforce and his associates have much to answer for. Our people here are quite quiet and seemingly content and happy.
