VERNE (Jules). Five Weeks in a Balloon. A Journey of Discovery in Africa by Three Englishmen. Illustrations by Messrs. Riou and de Montaut. Paris, Librairie Hachette, 1929. Large 8vo, publisher’s binding in red percaline, front cover adorned with a large polychrome and gilded plate from the Hetzel collection, decorated with exotic, scientific, and travel motifs; title in gold and black; spine illustrated in the same style; back cover with cold-stamped decoration. An illustrated edition of this famous novel by Jules Verne, part of the “Extraordinary Journeys” collection, which received an award from the Académie française. The text is accompanied by illustrations by Édouard Riou and Henri de Montaut, who had originally illustrated this first great adventure novel by Jules Verne. The book recounts the journey across Africa aboard the Victoria balloon by Dr. Samuel Fergusson and his companions, Kennedy and Joe. First published in 1863, *Five Weeks in a Balloon* is the first novel in the *Extraordinary Voyages* series and one of the foundational works of the Verne universe, blending geographical exploration, scientific progress, and adventure. A fine copy in a spectacular, highly decorative, polychrome Hetzel-style hardcover binding. However, the title page bears the address of Librairie Hachette, 79 Boulevard Saint-Germain, and the date 1929. Some foxing and browning on the paper. The cardboard binding is scuffed, with wear on the head, tail, corners, and spines; the lower spine is fragile, with a tear and a missing section of percaline, as visible in the photographs. The decoration on the front cover is nevertheless well-preserved, with the gold lettering still very prominent. An attractive copy of this 1929 Hachette edition, preserved in its remarkable polychrome cardboard binding inspired by the famous bindings of the *Voyages extraordinaires* series.
