A Georgian gold and bloodstone gryllus intaglio ring England, late 18th–early 19th century The canted rectangular bloodstone, of dark green colour naturally flecked with red, with bevelled edges and engraved in intaglio with a composite gryllus formed from two human masks together with the heads of a dog or wolf and a boar above the composition is an arched Latin motto, ‘FIDE SED QUI VIDE’ (translating to ‘Trust, but look to whom’) the intaglio collet-set in gold above openwork scrolling shoulders and a reeded hoop, size I, 4.9 grams, presented in a later jeweller’s box, marked Orient Jewels of London
