Ancient manuscript Qur’an – 2 single sheets recto-verso – 4 handwritten pages From a Qur’an in detached leaves. 17cm × 12cm. Probable date: second half of the 18th century, 1st half of the 19th century. Circa 1750–1850.. 2 single manuscript sheets recto-verso, i.e., four handwritten pages, from the same ancient Arabic Qur’anic manuscript kept in detached leaves. The set originates from a portion of a Qur’an (juzʾ) and includes several identifiable surahs. Among the passages formally recognized on the leaves are notably Surah al-Mulk (الملك, surah 67) as well as the final Surahs of the Qur’an, including al-Ikhlāṣ (الإخلاص, 112), al-Falaq (الفلق, 113) and al-Nās (الناس, 114). The Qur’anic text is copied in Arabic in a large regular and highly legible script in black ink, abundantly vocalized and punctuated with auxiliary signs. The titles and indications relating to the surahs are rubricated in red-orange ink, as are some reading and separation marks. The written surface is bounded by a multi-ruled polychrome hand-drawn frame, mainly red-orange and black, with occasionally a blue-green line. The surah changes are particularly decorative, their title, traditional classification and number of verses may be inscribed in red before the basmala, بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Provenance of the sheet material This sheet comes from a set of manuscript leaves. The leaves were contained in a binder-type cover posterior to the leaves with an old Arabic cataloging card that allows documenting its identification and chronological attribution. It bears notably, اسم الكتاب : جزء من القرآن الكريم Ism al-kitāb: Juzʾ min al-Qurʾān al-Karīm Book name: a part of the Noble Qur’an. The field reserved for the scribe’s name (اسم الكاتب) is not filled. The card further indicates: تاريخ الكتابة : القرن العاشر الهجري Tārīkh al-kitāba: al-qarn al-ʿāshir al-hijrī Date of copying: 10th century AH. 2 single leaves recto-verso from an Arabic Qur’anic manuscript. Handwritten in black ink with red-orange rubrication. Partial description of the 2 leaves. Surah Al-Burūj – The Constellations (end of the surah) It can be read, for example, Those who believed and did good deeds will have gardens beneath which rivers flow. That is the great success. The strictness of your Lord’s tone is formidable. He is the One who begins creation and renews it. He is the Forgiving, the Most Loving, the Master of the glorious Throne... But those who do not believe persist in denial. Allah encircles them from every side. This is rather a Glorious Qur’an, on a preserved Tablet. Surah Aṭ-Ṭāriq – The Night Seal (beginning) The title سورة الطارق is clearly written in red on the second photograph, By the heaven and by the night-traveller! And what can make you know what is the night-traveller? It is the piercing star. There is surely not a soul but has a guardian over it. So let man reflect on what he was created from… 2 single sheets recto-verso, 4 handwritten pages, 17cm × 12cm per single sheet. Smooth laid paper support. *Conservation tips, as it is very fragile.
