IMPORTANT AUBUSSON CARPET

Wool threads on a cotton ground. A cream-coloured field lends brightness to a design of foliage and rows of stylised, polychrome wreaths of flowers and foliage, framing a large circular central medallion with a powder-pink background, surrounded by an imposing garland of flowers and acanthus foliage that extends towards the borders. Beautiful colour gradients of olive green, tobacco, ochre and brown in the rendering of the foliage and scrolls. A wide border with a deep pink peripheral frieze frames the carpet, adorned with acanthus volutes and classical rosettes, delimited by a double geometric braid (small friezes of posts or ovals) which evokes the influence of ancient architecture characteristic of the Directoire period.
