André Lhote is a French artist, sculptor and art critic. He began to study sculpture at Ecole des Beaux Arts where he later transitioned to painting, which became his main artistic expression. Initially, his painting was inspired by Fauvism, but subsequently he drew nearer to Cubism. Lhote was one of the founders of the Nouvelle Revue Française magazine, where he was active until 1940. From 1918 to 1920 Lhote taught at the Académie Notre- Dame des Champs, and later at other Parisian art schools, including his own, which he founded in Montparnasse in 1922.
