Paintings

Painting is one of the oldest human practices, with evidence of this art form from over 32,000 years ago. Styles, techniques and materials used for painting have changed and advanced throughout this extensive period. One of the most important eras for painting was the Renaissance period (1300-1700), in which renowned artists such as Leonardo da Vinci, Sandro Botticelli and Raphael produced some of the finest paintings to date. The 19th and 20th centuries saw the development of numerous artistic styles adopted by painters, including abstraction, impressionism, cubism, surrealism and many others. Since prehistoric times up until the modern day, various surfaces have been used to apply paint to; some famous examples include 'The Last Judgement' of Michelangelo on the walls and ceiling of the Sistine Chapel and Keith Haring's body painting of Bill T.Jones. More traditional surfaces are canvas, wood and paper.
