Throughout the expansive history of porcelain, manufacturers of this ceramic ware have emerged which are distinguished for their quality, craftsmanship and design; in order to protect the authenticity of these carefully-crafted pieces, porcelain makers across the world have 'signed' their work with unique marks for centuries. These marks are vital for both dealers and buyers, as they provide information on the manufacturer, origin, date and value of a specific piece of porcelain. During the height of porcelain production in Europe, some of the most recognised marks today were first used; these include the Capodimonte crown over 'N' and the Meissen crossed swords. Over the years, porcelain marks have been altered and developed by manufacturers, indicating the year or period of production; for instance, German company Hutschenreuther first marked its porcelain ware with a simple signature, later adopting the iconic lion logo.
