29 July 2021 marks forty years since the wedding of Princess Diana and Prince Charles at St. Paul's Cathedral. Attended by 3,500 guests and watched by 750 million people, the royal wedding was considered the wedding of the century. Twenty-three official wedding cakes were made in celebration, and now a slice from one of them can be bought at auction.

This particular slice was gifted to Moyra Smith, an employee of the Queen Mother at Clarence House. The full cake was likely sent to Clarence House for the staff. Smith preserved her slice of cake for the past forty years in plastic wrap in a cake tin. It was acquired directly from her family by Dominic Winter Auctioneers in August 2008.

Now, the auction house is offering the slice with an estimate of £200-300 at their auction on 11 August. Although it is in good condition, the cake is not advised to be eaten. Also accompanying the slice are printed Ceremonial and Order of Service programmes for the wedding in St Paul's Cathedral and a programme for the memorial Royal Wedding Breakfast at Buckingham Palace.

In honour of the 40th anniversary of the wedding, Diana's iconic wedding dress, designed by David and Elizabeth Emanuel, is now being exhibited at Kensington Palace until 2 January 2022.
