Raimundo de Madrazo y Garreta (1841-1920) was a Spanish academic realist painter who was greatly admired by his contemporaries and audiences alike whilst he was active. His father, Federico de Madrazo, was also a famous Spanish portraitist. It is he who will bring him his first training before he joins the School of Fine Arts in Madrid.
In 1860, Raimundo de Madrazo participated for the first time in the World Exhibition. After this he moved to Paris where he was taught by Leon Cogniet.
De Madrazo's remarkable technical abilities made him a successful portrait painter. He painted many rich French, American, British and Argentinians.
He is also known for his clever and often coquettish genre scenes.
The two portraits above depict two upper class women dressed lavishly. The background, compromised of blurred brushstrokes add to the dreamlike atmosphere of the canvas.
Both these pieces will be featured in Duran's auction on 19th December, 2017. Check out more here.
