For Vivienne Westwood’s ‘Wild Beauty’ Autumn/Winter 2022-23 collection, Lots Road Auctions’ eccentric salerooms were chosen to feature as the backdrops for the fashion line. The shabby but chic warehouse-style rooms were filled to the brim with both antique and modern furniture, perfectly complementing Westwood’s equally eclectic style.

The two houses seem like a match made in heaven. Lots Road Auctions was established in 1979 and made a name for itself by selling contemporary and antique items at affordable prices, quickly attracting a large number of visitors to its Chelsea showrooms. Selling everything from vintage sofas and armchairs, rich textiles and Persian rugs, as well as Henri Matisse etchings and David Hockney prints, the house is known “for all things authentic, alternative, eclectic and magnificent”.

Vivienne Westwood’s style is also known for its quirks and complex influences, at once mixing punk, new romantic and classic tailoring in one of her pieces. Having established her first boutique in 1971 in Chelsea’s Kings Road, she quickly became known for her provocative punk style which, thanks to her, shortly after became mainstream fashion.

As a scholar of fashion and art history, Westwood intersperses art references throughout her clothing. With her new collection featuring paintings by Jean-Bapiste Oudry and Pieter Brueghel, as well as a Matisse-inspired eye print, it’s only fitting that the collection be shot at an auction house filled with paintings and antiquities, known also for selling vintage and secondhand fashion.

The photoshoot turned out a great success, and the two houses will also be collaborating on a ‘Buy Less’ scheme, which supports the elimination of waste through Lots Road Auctions. For Westwood’s collection, elements of previous collections were mixed into the new, with fabrics and materials sourced from sustainable suppliers. As for Lots Road, the auction process lends itself naturally to sustainable practices: why buy something new, when you can buy pre-loved items full of history – and quality? It also helps that the house offers an incredibly vast array of items, fit for everyone’s unique and authentic taste.
