In a striking twist of timing, Wayne Gretzky's iconic Rolls-Royce is now up for sale—just days after Alex Ovechkin shattered the NHL scoring record that Gretzky held for decades.
The vehicle, a sleek black 1994 Rolls-Royce Corniche IV bearing the license plate GOAL 802, was a gift from the Los Angeles Kings to Gretzky after he netted his 802nd NHL goal on March 23, 1994, surpassing Gordie Howe to become the league’s all-time leading scorer. Now, this one-of-a-kind car is being offered through RM Sotheby’s "Sealed" auction platform, with bidding open until April 17. The asking price: $894,899 (approximately £688,500).

More than just a luxury car, it stands as a symbol of a historic turning point in hockey. As Gretzky now watches from the stands while Ovechkin scores his record-breaking 895th goal, collectors have the rare chance to own a piece of sporting legend.
“The timing is incredible,” says Shelby Myers, RM Sotheby’s Global Head of Private Sales. “This car isn’t just a beautiful classic—it’s a symbol of one of the most legendary moments in sports. It will forever connect two of hockey’s greatest names.”

One of only 219 Corniche IVs ever built, the car remains in outstanding condition, showing just over 14,600 kilometers. With its black paint, vermilion accents, and black leather interior with walnut trim, it radiates timeless British elegance.
Gretzky was presented with the Rolls-Royce in a ceremony on March 30, 1994, a week after his milestone goal against the Vancouver Canucks. Ever humble, he remarked, “It’s almost a little embarrassing to receive a car like this—but I’m very grateful.”

Since then, the car has passed through a few careful owners and has recently undergone a comprehensive restoration, with over $17,000 spent in 2024 to bring it back to peak condition.

For collectors of rare automobiles, hockey memorabilia, or those who simply admire sporting greatness, this Rolls-Royce represents more than prestige—it’s a tangible piece of history from the era when Wayne Gretzky not only redefined the NHL, but forever changed the game.
