A great opportunity for the mega fans of series Game of Thrones, the Irish Gosford Castle is up for grabs. Renamed "Riverrun" for the shows purpose, the person with at least $656,400 to spend on a potential new home could be the lucky new owner.
The castle was built by the second Earl of Gosford, Archibald Acheson after being designed by the British architect Thomas Hopper. Gosford wasn’t completed until 1859 and belonged to the same family up until 1921.
Over the years, the castle has served many purposes. During World War II it was used as a haven for British troops.
The castle includes nearly 10 bathrooms, 15 bedrooms, 6 apartments, outbuildings and several gardens. Enough to feed the imagination of a new owner, who will be free to modulate the property as he or she sees fit.
In 1983, a family from Belfast tried to turn the castle into a hotel, but the costs of maintaining such a facility were too high and the project fell through. The grounds were left behind and suffered several acts of vandalism, which pushed the owners to sell the building in 2010.
Thanks to an initiative by the Irish government in 2013, the castle was restored before being spotted by the Game of Thrones producers. For the third season of the popular show, Gosford Castle was used for it’s exterior, portraying the Tully’s household Riverrun.
Calling Riverrun your new home wouldn’t be so bad, right?
The property is up for sale to the highest bidder through the agency Maison Real Estate.
