One of the greatest legends of the fashion world is undoubtably Karl Lagerfeld, who passed at the age of 85 in February 2019. Now, his estate is heading to auction at Sotheby's this December, with two live auctions and two online auctions.

The events are being presented by Sotheby's in Paris and Monaco, near to Lagerfeld's Villa La Vigie, which he purchased from Rainier III, Prince of Monaco on the condition that it would be renovated. Lagerfeld did this very lavishly in the Rococo style, which he was fascinated by in the 1980s. Ten years later, Lagerfeld turned his back on Rococo to explore contemporary design and Art Deco.

In the first auction, which will take place from 3-5 December in Monaco, the focus in the area of design is primarily on the 1920s and '30s, with particular reference to pieces of furniture by the French Art Deco icons Louis Süe and André Mare. A wonderful addition to this are artworks by Georges Lepape, whose fashion drawings were absolutely groundbreaking in these two decades.

Further highlights are works by contemporary artists such as Takashi Murakami, John Baldessari and Jeff Koons, as well as the Portuguese Joana Vasconcelos, who immortalised Lagerfeld's beloved cat Choupette in faience and crochet.

The live auctions will continue on 14 and 15 December in Lagerfeld's adopted home of Paris, where the focus is on contemporary design that the fashion designer collected over the last twenty years of his life, such as futuristic designs by Mark Newson, Martin Szekely and Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec.

The auctions are rounded off with high-quality tableware and silverware, fine luggage, and drawings by Lagerfeld himself, as well as a selection of his legendary black jackets, sunglasses and fingerless gloves that defined the fashion designer's style.

The online auctions (26 November to 6 December, and 6-17 December) also include a large number of objects that perfectly illustrate Lagerfeld's lavish lifestyle and personal taste. The auctions in Monaco and Paris will be supplemented by an additional auction in Cologne in March 2022.
