Timeless Treasures: Designer Handbags and Fashion to Snap Up

On 16 March, the London-based auction house Elmwood’s is presenting its second Designer Handbags and Fashion sale, and the impressive catalogue provides plenty of opportunities to snag your dream bag. From rare Hermès Birkins to vintage Fendi purses, there are pieces suited to all styles and price points.  

The Birkin is one of the most iconic bags ever made, and this show-stopping Sellier variation takes centre stage during the sale. First released in 2010 as a limited edition and re-released in 2020, the Sellier Birkin represents only 5% of the Birkin bags sold at auction. This rare and exclusive design features clean lines, durable Epsom leather and outside stitching as opposed to the Retourne style which is flipped inside out, creating its more casual feel. The bag appearing in the sale is done in tasteful vert amande (green-grey) leather, and finished with gleaming gold hardware. Additionally, it was made in 2022 and is in as-new condition, complete with all original packaging, accessories and protective stickers.

Another stunning offer from Hermès is this Kelly 25 bag from 2005. The rich chocolate Epsom leather is accentuated with orange piping and gold hardware, which gives the classic design a contemporary touch. The Kelly bag was originally produced in the 1930s and made famous by Grace Kelly, who was photographed holding the bag over her stomach in a rumoured attempt to conceal her pregnancy. Its bold trapezoidal shape has a slightly masculine feel and is the epitome of timeless elegance. 

In addition to cementing the ‘little black dress’ as a wardrobe staple, Coco Chanel changed handbag history when she debuted her shoulder strap purse in 1955. Before then, shoulder bags were generally considered less elegant than handbags. However, Chanel’s shoulder strap flap bag married sophistication with practicality and quickly became an iconic design. This vintage double-flap model dates from the early 1990s and features a quilted lambskin exterior, burgundy interior, and, of course, two thin gold chain straps laced with leather.

Spacious and practical, Loewe’s Puzzle bag is simple enough for everyday use but refined enough for special occasions. Its unique design features both a drop handle and an adjustable shoulder strap, meaning that it can be used as a clutch, handbag, crossbody purse, tote, or even as a backpack. This model is made from smooth tan leather with a durable cotton interior and silver hardware, and its subtle branding emanates understated luxury.

For collectors who prefer accessories that make a statement, Fendi’s vintage shoulder bag is an enticing option. It’s made from swirled turquoise fabric that’s enhanced with all-over beading for added depth and sparkle and finished with matching wrap-around straps. Although it is a vintage piece, the beading is well-preserved and the bag even comes with its original dust bag. The colour and style fit right in with trendy Y2K revival fashion, making it a playful choice for your wardrobe.

The sale also includes luxury accessories such as Hermès silk scarves and a cashmere Chanel hat, as well as unusual items such as this black leather guitar case from Gucci. The rare case is decorated with the words 'Gucci Band' in white lettering on the front and a quote from the historian and archeologist Paul Veyne on the back. It’s sturdy and well-crafted, and the emerald green crushed velvet lining will keep a prized instrument protected from dust and damage.
